The MLC Index - for more textile sustainability
The MLC-Index is a novel test method for microplastics created during the production or use of textiles such as clothing, towels, washcloths, wipes and many others. Manufacturers of these textiles can use the MLC index to develop advanced and sustainable products and solutions that help reduce microplastic pollution.
Products that avoid the release of microplastics can be certified and thus labeled via the MLC Index - when shopping, one can see at first glance which items are particularly sustainable within this framework.
By the way: The MLC index is already used as an important criterion for the internationally known "Nordic Ecolabel" seal, also known as the "Nordic Swan". This certificate is roughly equivalent to the “Blue Angel” known in Germany, which is used to label environmentally friendly products.
Background: Why microplastics are dangerous
Most modern textiles used on a daily basis contain synthetic fibers such as polyester or polyamide. However, many synthetic fibers are suspected of releasing microplastics, causing unforeseeable interactions for the earth's ecosystem - and for human health. It is therefore necessary to make the microplastic release of textile products measurable and to classify it on an index – so that manufacturers can develop sustainable products.
Further technical information on the topic of microplastics can be found on the website of the Weber & Leucht laboratory.
